AI Is a Tool: Using AI Safely

This introductory classroom lesson gives elementary students a safe, developmentally appropriate first framework for understanding artificial intelligence. Students learn that AI is a computer tool, not a person; that AI can sound human without having feelings; that important information should be checked; that private information should be protected; and that younger students should use AI with a trusted adult involved. The lesson is designed to be completed without a student AI account or direct student interaction with a chatbot.

What students will explore

1. Explain in simple language that AI is a computer tool that can create words, images, sounds, ideas, and answers.
2. Distinguish between a tool that sounds human and a real person who can feel, care, and take responsibility.
3. Identify situations in which a trusted adult should be involved.
4. Recognize examples of information that should remain private.
5. Remember that AI can make mistakes and that important claims should be checked.
6. Use the phrase "brain first" to describe learning before asking AI to do the work.
