Lower school: concrete safety habits

Young learners benefit from short, memorable rules and close adult involvement. Avoid asking children to diagnose technical risks on their own.

  • Use AI only with a trusted adult or teacher.
  • Never share private information, photos, recordings, passwords, or someone else’s story.
  • Use your brain first; AI may help you learn but should not do your learning.
  • AI can sound human and still be wrong. Check important ideas with a person.
  • If something feels scary, secretive, or uncomfortable: stop, close, and tell.

Middle school: permission and process

Middle school learners can begin distinguishing helpful support from substitution. Rules should be specific enough that students can tell what is permitted before they start.

  • Check the teacher’s AI rule for every assignment.
  • Ask for hints, questions, examples, or feedback—not finished work presented as your own.
  • Verify important claims with reliable sources.
  • Do not upload another person’s work, image, voice, or information without permission.
  • Explain meaningful AI help when the teacher or school requires disclosure.

High school: context and accountability

High school expectations should prepare learners for college, employment, and civic life. Different disciplines and assignments may set different boundaries.

  • Follow the assignment’s permitted-use level and preserve required drafts or prompt records.
  • Cite or disclose AI assistance using the required local format.
  • Trace factual claims and quotations to original, credible sources.
  • Do not fabricate evidence, sources, experiences, data, images, or authorship.
  • You are responsible for the accuracy, fairness, safety, and integrity of work submitted in your name.

Higher education: disciplinary and professional standards

College and university learners may encounter different expectations by course, research method, placement, laboratory, licensure, employer, journal, or profession. A campus-wide baseline should leave room for those legitimate differences.

  • Confirm course, program, research, and professional rules before use.
  • Protect participant, patient, client, institutional, proprietary, and unpublished information.
  • Document tools, models, prompts, outputs, and human revisions when reproducibility or disclosure matters.
  • Do not treat generated citations, calculations, code, or analysis as verified.
  • Keep final academic and professional judgment with accountable people.
